Abortions are an extremely controversial topic due to the fact that there are many people on both sides of the topic who strongly support their side and oppose the other. The main issue with abortion is whether it should be legal or illegal. In Argentina a religiously influenced country where abortion is illegal a debate on a bill which would make abortions within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy legal had taken place in early august. The anticipation leading up to the debate and the outcome of the debate sparked a lot of controversy among the people of Argentina. Although there are many people that are strictly against abortion on the grounds that it is “murder” and religiously and morally incorrect there are also many people who believe that a woman should have the choice to do as she pleases with her body.
A bill which would legalize abortions within the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy in Argentina had caught a lot of attention from the people due to the fact that it sparked a lot of controversy amongst the people of Argentina. Many people were against the bill and did not want it to be passed, but there were also many people pushing for the bill to be passed. Both sides strongly supported their side and strongly opposed the other. Those who opposed the passing of the bill opposed it because they see abortion as murder and no one has the right to make a decision on whether or not a living being should live or not and they showed their support in many different ways. An example being the declaration of the Tucuman province in Argentina being declared pro life. A politician who was a part of the decision says “The argument in favor of abortion, called ‘the right to choose,’ is false. It says nothing of the right to life of the one developing in the womb. The ideology in favor of abortion is trying to plant the idea that only one person exists, when science affirms there are two.” She also adds to that

saying “as people or human beings we’re not the ones to decide who ought to live or die. Only the supreme being, who is our God, has that decision”(CNA) The civilians themselves are also protesting against legal abortion. Empowered by the church the people are speaking out and rallying together to fight the legalization of abortion. A CNN article says “Since the Pope’s comments, abortion opponents have pushed back against the bill, with thousands rallying in rural areas of the country and in the streets of Buenos Aires, wearing blue bandanas emblazoned with the slogan “Save both lives.” We can see that a lot of people strongly oppose abortions and seeing that the country s religiously influenced there’s a lot of support for those who are anti-abortion. The Catholic Church also held a “mass for life’ at the Buenos Aires cathedral”(The Guardian) during the debate to rally support for the pro abortion cause. We can see that many different people strongly disagree with the legalization of abortion and are strongly opposing it.
Although there are many people against the passing of the bill there are also many who support it. For example the group “Ni una menos” those who started the movement that pushed abortion to being a priority within the media and government of Argentina which led to the creation of the bill. They were also able to rally enough support to push the bill past the house to get it to the senate. The people wanted abortion to be legalized because they want women to have a choice to do as they please with their bodies. And the fact that abortion is illegal leads to a lot of deaths caused by unprofessional abortions. If abortion was legal women wouldn’t have to get them done illegally and their lives wouldn’t be in jeopardy in a country where unprofessional abortions are the leading cause of maternal deaths. Many people came together in support of the bill and took action. A poll taken by amnesty shows that the movement has a lot a support from the citizens in Argentina. The guardian states “ Polling suggests Argentinians

are heavily in favour of the bill: in a survey carried out by Amnesty earlier this year, around 60% of respondents said they supported legalization”(The Guardian). Although not every Citizen took part in the poll a majority of those who did were in support of the legalization of Abortion. Pro abortionist movements gained a lot of support from civilians from not just Argentina. “On Wednesday, demonstrators rallied in support of the Argentine bill in Uruguay, Mexico, Peru, and neighboring Chile, where they gathered in front of the Argentine Embassy in Santiago, chanting and wearing the green handkerchiefs that became the symbol of Argentina’s abortion rights movement”(Pilotti and Londono). We can see that a lot of people are in support of the bill and wished for it to be passed.
The debate was over on August 9 and the final vote was 38-31 in favor of those who were pro life. The fact that the final vote was this close is enough to show that there is controversy present on the topic. The outcome left many people devastated and others were celebrating . An Article on Independent states “Anti-abortion demonstrators were pictured celebrating outside the congress building before dawn on Thursday after the result was announced, while those favouring abortion were pictured in tears – the issue has left Argentina divided” Politi and Londono also state that “Many hung their heads in defeat.” We can see that the decision had different effects on different people based on their position. People so strongly believed in one side or the other that they became either joyful or devastated.
In conclusion the debate sparked a lot of controversy among the people of Argentina. The people had been split apart and the people were showing support for their cause prior to the debate and even during the debate and after the debate some rejoiced from the outcome and many hung their heads in defeat. Many people believed abortion shouldn’t be legalized for various reasons and many others believed Abortion should be legalized for other reasons.
